Register now for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunshine Coast
The nation’s biggest community-based environment event – Clean Up Australia Day – is on this Sunday, March 6 and Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to get involved.
Volunteers can either join an existing site or form a group and register a site on the Clean Up Australia website.
Infrastructure Services Director Andrew Ryan encouraged all Sunshine Coast residents to be part of the day, which is supported by council and its waste collection contractor Remondis.
“I encourage people to get together with friends and family to clean up and fix their favourite areas in our beautiful region,” Mr Ryan said.
“Registered sites will receive a Clean Up kit including bags, gloves, event information and public liability cover.”
Mr Ryan said there were many Sunshine Coast community groups who had been participating in Clean Up Australia Day since it started in 1990, and in some cases their commitment to cleaning up the environment was even longer.
“We consistently receive great community support for this event. There are usually around 1000 volunteers at more than 70 clean-up sites, and I hope we can continue that trend this year,” he said.
“Thank you to those groups, and the many individuals who join in, for their ongoing efforts – we know ‘Clean Up’ is an everyday activity for many of you.
“And a special thank you to all the schools supporting the program, with this year marking the 25th anniversary of the Clean Up Australia Day program’s Schools Clean Up Day event.”
Immanuel Lutheran College teacher Rod Blom said the College had been a proud supporter of the program for many years.
“Immanuel’s Eco Club is involved in a number of initiatives teaching students about waste management and environment sustainability both inside and outside of the school grounds,” Mr Blom said.
“The Eco Club is looking forward to doing their bit for the environment in 2016 and Clean Up Australia Day is the first community project for the students.
“This year we anticipate around 20-30 of our student members will be donning the gloves and picking up rubbish along the Cotton Tree Esplanade.”
As part of the Clean Up Australia Day program, Business Clean Up Day is on Tuesday, March 1 and Schools Clean Up Day is on Friday, March 4.
